Pet travel certificates & advice
Travelling abroad with your pet can be a fantastic experience. However, you need to book your pet in for the necessary health checks well before your travel dates so that the correct official paperwork can be issued. We recommended booking a pet travel consultation at least 2 months in advance of your travel dates. Contact our team for advice early.
EU Travel
- Your pet will need an Animal Health Certificate. British issued Pet Passports are no longer valid for travel.
- Your pet must be microchipped
- Your pet must have been vaccinated for rabies at least 21 days prior to travel
- The AHC is valid for ten days once issued (excluding time on a ferry)
- The AHC is valid for 4 months onward travel within the EU and back home. If your trip is going to be longer than 4 months please book an appointment to discuss your specific needs.
- Generally a new AHC is required for each trip out of the UK
- An official vet may need to treat your pet for tapeworm depending on which countries you intend to visit.
Travel beyond the EU
- Your pet is still likely to require an AHC
- Additional documents may be required depending on your destination
- Additional vaccinations and blood tests may be required depending on your destination
It’s always worth visiting the relevant government agency website of your destination country to find out more about taking your pet abroad. For further information visit www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad
Not all vets have the necessary qualifications to issue pet travel certificates. At AllPets Vets, Richard can take care of this for you. Please make sure to mention you require a pet travel certificate when booking your appointment.
